Garcinia cambogia reduces high-fat diet-induced hyperlipidemia

Research has reported that Garcinia cambogia can reduce the effects of high-fat diets. The study, which was published in the Journal of Complementary and Integrative Medicine, discovered that Garcinia cambogia is effective in improving lipid profiles and reducing oxidative stress. Researchers at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research in India looked at the antihyperlipidemic and antioxidant activities of the ethanolic extract of Garcinia cambogia on high fat diet-fed rats.

  • For the study, they fed mice with either standard diet or 30 percent high-fat diet.
  • Then, they gave the mice garcinia cambogia at a dose of 400 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) body weight per day for 10 weeks.
  • The team assessed the phytochemical constituents, total polyphenol content, and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) of Garcinia cambogia.
  • They measured the lipid profile and oxidative stress parameters of the rats at the end of the treatment period.
  • Garcinia cambogia contains carbohydrates, proteins, sterols, tannins, flavonoids, and saponins.
  • High-fat feeding caused increases in plasma total cholesterol, triglycerides, non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL), and malondialdehyde (MDA).
  • It also caused reductions in HDL cholesterol and blood antioxidants, glutathione, glutathione peroxidase (Gpx), and catalase.
  • It increased total oxidant status and oxidative stress in plasma, liver, and kidney while decreasing the total antioxidant status of rats.
  • The treatment of Garcinia cambogia reduced food intake, total cholesterol, triglycerides, non-HDL cholesterol, and MDA.
  • Garcinia cambogia also increased HDL cholesterol and antioxidants.
  • It reduced total oxidant status and oxidative stress and increased total antioxidant status in blood and liver of rats.

The findings of the study suggested that Garcinia cambogia is effective in reducing hyperlipidemia and oxidative stress caused by high-fat diets.
